Golden Globes 2019: Richard Madden wins Best Actor in a TV Drama for The Bodyguard

Bodyguard star Richard Madden has won a Golden Globe for his role in the acclaimed BBC drama.

The British series, from Line of Duty creator Jed Mercurio, may have aired on Netflix in the US just months ago, but impressed the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) enough to score the Scottish actor his first Golden Globe trophy.

The former Game of Thrones star thanked Mercurio and his co-star Keeley Hawes, who sent the actor her best wishes ahead of the ceremony.

With a total of 41.3 million requests, Bodyguard became the most-watched show on iPlayer following its debut in 2018.

Following Madden's win, fans of the BBC drama expressed their happiness on social media.

The 76th Golden Globes ceremony was hosted by Killing Eve star Sandra Oh and Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s Andy Samberg, whose quips led to a whitewashing apology from Emma Stone.

The evening, designed to award the best in film and television, saw wins for Green Book, The Marvelous Mrs Maisel and Bohemian Rhapsody, which was the unexpected recipient of the ceremony's biggest award.
