It was reported earlier on this year that a Nic Pizzolatto's crime anthology series True Detective was unlikely to return for a third season.

While its first season - starring Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey - is considered something of a modern classic, its second run didn't fare so well; starring Colin Farrell, Vince Vaughn, Rachel McAdams and Taylor Kitsch, the California-set season was widely perceived to be inferior to its predecessor.

HBO president Casey Bloys has suggested that the show isn't as unlikely as first thought, however.

Speaking at Television Critics Association Summer Tour, Bloys stated the series "[is] not dead."

"We are hoping for a third season," he elaborated. "It's a very valuable franchise for us."

Bloys added that "the right take" is yet to be decided but that showrunner Pizzolatto will defer writing duties to somebody else.

He also provided updates on the confirmed new season of Curb Your Enthusiasm - which will air in 2017 - and the yet-to-be-greenlit Deadwood movie which creator David Milch is currently writing.
