The Role:
Our client requires an Environmental Economist to join their teams engaged in research and consultancy work for a wide range of UK and overseas clients, including the Water Industry (UK and overseas), Environment Agency, the European Environment Agency, Defra and communities, Local Government, The Department of Transport and the European Commission (DG Environment).
Duties:
The successful candidate will be required to produce reports/outputs to client expectations, and more specifically:
• To undertake research to a high technical quality in the broad area of economics and environmental management. It is expected that this will span all areas of business.
• To maintain awareness and an ability to apply the various techniques of non-market valuation and policy and project appraisal - cost-benefit analysis, cost-effectiveness analysis, risk assessment, performance matrices, multi-criteria approaches, regulatory impact and compliance cost assessment etc.
• To maintain an awareness of developments in the water industry in the UK and internationally and to be able to advise on the impacts of water sector regulatory reform.
• To supervise the work of junior members of staff in contributing to the objectives of projects.
• To liase with other experts within and outside the company to ensure projects are delivered on time, in an integrated and cost-effective manner.
• To manage jobs and contracts (subcontracting, forecasting, invoicing, expense accounting).
• To promote the employer at all available opportunities and ensure they are invited to tender on new work.
• To respond to published calls for expressions of interest.
• To respond to calls for tender through the development of proposals involving the development of methodologies, work programmes and tender prices.
• To carry forward selected sales and marketing initiatives aimed at increasing new business development in the short and medium term.
• To develop effective team working relationships with other experts and staff within the company and externally.
Experience and skills:
Candidates should have:
• A first degree in economics and a post graduate qualification in environmental economics or a related discipline.
• Significant post-graduate experience, preferably in a consultancy environment.
• Experience of applying economic valuation and appraisal techniques.
• Strong numerical, analytical communication and presentational skills with the ability to express complex ideas clearly.
