Accounting for International Development (AfID) arranges tailor-made volunteer placements from 2 weeks to 2 years with charities all over the developing world.
You could be training Tanzanians in bookkeeping, budgeting for a school in El Salvador, financial reporting for a hospital in Thailand or mentoring an INGO's new FC in Cameroon.
For a better idea of the kind of role you could be performing, read here about our past volunteers: http://www.afid.org.uk/interview-stephen-white
We’ve placed over 300 accountants in 28 countries – old and young, management accountant, forensic accountant, auditor, chartered accountant or financial accountant; your skills are relevant and needed.
Grassroots organisations such as health clinics, street child centres and schools hugely benefit from financial coaching and support: the improvement in financial management allows them to continue their good work, to support more people in their communities and secure a long term future. This is also a chance to gain experience in the third sector if you are looking for a career change.
AfID now supports over 150 charities: let us know your availability, the countries and issues you’re interested in, along with your strengths, and we will customise voluntary assignments to match your profile.
Assignments typically focus on areas such as:
- Conducting a Financial Health Assessment/Internal Audit
- Coaching and developing the accounting skills of local charity staff
- Assisting with the preparation and analysis of financial plans and budgets
- International donor relations reporting
- Implementation of robust and sustainable financial controls and procedures
The need for skilled accountants is largely driven by a lack of training at local level, combined with the complex reporting requirements of donor organisations.
When you are a headmistress, doctor or a nun trying to run a charity with very limited resources, it can be very difficult to keep accurate records and perform your normal duties - with a different set of accounts and reports required by each donor, of which there can be many, you begin to see the problem.

We also have a small number of UK based roles.
Please forward our details to any accountants in your network that you think would be interested in our work.
