The company is part of an international organization and is looking to recruit an Environmental Advisor in the central and environmental services that will be solely responsible for themself only.

The Role:

The Environmental Advisor will support the business with all aspects of environmental management; providing specialist advice and training, and promoting best practice to achieve legislative compliance and environmental sustainability. To undertake internal audits at company locations and contracting sites ensuring the effective implementation of the company’s environmental management system, seeking and facilitating improvements to the system as appropriate. Prepare statistical data and reports to demonstrate performance in respect of compliance and environmental sustainability

Key tasks will include;

• Provide support and guidance to company personnel on environmental issues including risk minimisation through good practice, legislative compliance and application of the EMS
• Assist with the development, maintenance and improvement of the Environmental Management System, including policies, procedures and guidance notes
• Plan, programme and undertake internal environmental audits; report findings and ensure concerns are addressed though effective corrective actions
• Review compliance with legal and corporate requirements and provide assistance as necessary with environmental permit and licence applications.
• Work with the business to improve environmental sustainability, assist with cost/benefit analysis to assess opportunities and share best-practice
• Provision of training on environmental issues to all levels of the business, including formal in-house training courses
• Assist with the collation and analysis of Greenhouse Gas Emissions data and contribute to the development and delivery of the Emissions Reduction Plan
• Provide support to activity managers during Third Party assessments as required
• Assist with the preparation of management system performance data including input to Management Review
• Participate in the company’s ‘Make it Happen’ improvement programme with the MiH Environment Team
• To carry out other appropriate duties as assigned by the line manager
• To ensure all operations carried out within area of responsibility are undertaken with full regard for safety of visitors, other members of staff and self.

Person Specification:

The Environmental Advisor will need to have;

• Degree level qualification in Environmental Science or similar, or
• Sound basic education with specific environmental training e.g. Foundation Certificate in Environmental Management (IEMA)
• Internal EMS Auditor (IEMA approved course)
• Associate Membership (or higher) of Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA)
• Advanced/Lead EMS Auditor (IEMA Approved Course)
The Environmental Advisor will have experience in;
• Practical experience of environmental management, including audit function; ideally within Highways Maintenance sector
• Thorough knowledge of key UK environmental legislation
• Understanding of environmental sustainability, including measurement and management of Greenhouse Gas Emissions
• Experience in the development, implementation and maintenance of Environmental Management Systems
• Thorough knowledge of ISO 14001, and working knowledge of ISO9001 and OHSAS 18001 standards
