Our partner, based in Phnom Penh is a peace-building and youth empowerment organisations which aims to inspire and empower the next generation of leaders in South-East Asia. They predominantly run summer exchange programmes for Cambodian and Vietnamese university students where the students take part in service learning, group travel and leadership. Given the fraught history between both countries, our partner aims to prepare students to tackle the complex social and environmental problems of the region, collaboratively and unhindered by the memories of past conflicts or stereotypes.
This would be a first volunteer assignment and as the first AfID volunteer at the organisation your role would be akin to conducting an internal audit. You will need to gain an understanding of the organisation and its structure, assessing its existing financial procedures and controls, and making recommendations / implementing changes that you deem necessary. The current accounting system was set up on Excel by the Executive Director, who does not have a formal background in accounting. As such, they would like an experienced accountant to review the current system to ensure it is fit for purpose. Apart from the first volunteer brief, they would also like help with transitioning to Quickbooks. If you have no previous quickbook experience AfID provide manuals beforehand to familiarize yourself with the system. AfID has had multiple volunteers set up Quickbooks for organisations without prior experience of using the system. You would also predominantly be working with and training our partner’s part-time accountant and the Executive Director. Volunteer is ideally expected to start in November.
