Mechanical Testing Technician and Laboratory Services Manager
Salary Range: £42,670 to £51,590 per annum
The Mechanics of Materials and Applied Mechanics Research Divisions within the Department of Mechanical Engineering operate a number of laboratories engaged in experimental research. The post-holder will be responsible for providing the administrative management (20% of the time) of five Laboratory Technicians who supervise and operate a number of these research laboratories, as well as running research laboratories on measuring the mechanical properties of materials of their own (80% of the time).
For approximately 20% of the time, the post-holder will be responsible for the performance and co-ordination of these reporting technicians. As well as the day to day issues such as absences and attendance, they will also be required to assist in their training and personal development planning.
For the remainder of their time, the post-holder will have personal responsibility for laboratories concerned with experimental studies on the deformation, fracture and fatigue of a wide range of materials. They will be required to support academics, staff and research students undertaking testing in these laboratories. The post-holder will be responsible for maintaining the laboratory and the test equipment, monitoring experiments, liaising with suppliers on repairs, modifications, maintenance and calibration issues and Health & Safety matters.
Candidates should have a minimum of a BTEC, City Guilds or HNC in Mechanical Engineering or a science based subject, but a first degree (or equivalent) in engineering, materials science or physics is preferred. Recognised training in Health & Safety procedures of the type used and relevant in a workshop or laboratory is requested.
Recognised achievements in mechanical testing or a similar technical area are preferred. Applicants must also have management experience gained in either a workshop or similar laboratory role. The post-holder must be capable of working to tight deadlines on multiple projects and demonstrate the ability to lead and motivate others.
