Key responsibilities of the role:
The hiring company are recruiting for a Ruby developer specialising in web technologies to provide maintenance and development of an established Ruby on Rails application. Day-to-day activities will include:
Primary day-to-day responsibility will be assuming end-to-end technical ownership of an established product, including maintenance and development of new features, working initially as a solo developer. The successful candidate will work with an established QA and business analysis team to deliver excellent technical development. The business is dynamic and the candidate will be expected to actively develop their skill-set relishing new development opportunities within the business as circumstances dictate.
Development – 75%
The candidate will be expected to pro-actively review bug lists and change requests, prioritising workload and modifying an established code-base as necessary to meet business requirements on different projects simultaneously. They will be expected to conform to industry standard coding conventions, using appropriate SCM tools to produce high quality code, vast in prototyping solutions with excellent problem solving, and delivery estimation skills.
Peer QA – 5%
Although the candidate will be a sole developer, they must be able to objectively review their own, and existing code.
Analysis & design – 10%
The candidate will be expected to develop a thorough understanding of the business requirements determined internally and effectively communicate them to external developers, assessing technical design decisions for suitability. Contribute to all aspects of the SDLC, from specification and design, development, integration, rollout and maintenance
Administration – 10%
Time will be set aside for development methodology overhead, meetings, discussions and coordination of release management.
Key candidate requirements for the role:
•This role most suits a candidate with commercial experience using Ruby on Rails (2.0 and 3.0), ideally up to one years’ experience. The developer should be comfortable working with numerous internal and external stakeholders.
•A degree in Computer Science or related degrees would be ideal but not a pre-requisite, experience using Ruby is far more important.
•Ideally someone with a solid understanding of design patterns, advantages of dynamic over static typing, packaging and deployment (via gems).
•The candidate should be self-motivating, able to effectively manage personal workload and prioritise tasks without supervision.
•Experience in MYSQL and Java would be beneficial.
