We are looking for a Technician to work in the Tribology Group in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Imperial College London.
You will be working with Senior Research staff, Academics and Research staff within the Tribology Group and also assisting the undergraduate students. You will provide and maintain a professional research laboratory service, enabling the pursuit of experimental research in Tribology and to ensure the safe and effective working of the Tribology research laboratory.
The primary function is in providing support for the experimental laboratories within the group covering metrology (e.g. CMM, Talysurf), microscopy, interferometry, spectroscopy, indentation, rolling contact fatigue, and in-house and commercial tribometers, assisting with designing and running experiments, and using PC based data acquisition and logging equipment. You will also be required to organise and arrange the periodic maintenance and calibration of the laboratory and test equipment in order to maintain experimental quality. Discussing hardware and software requirements with the academic staff, proposing equipment updates and liaising with the equipment providers are other important aspects of the role.
You should be educated to a minimum of BTEC/HNC in Engineering (or equivalent), and have graduate-level knowledge of conventional tribological testing methods and the required equipment and instrumentation knowledge. You should also have advanced knowledge of surface and lubricant characterisation techniques.
