Sewing programmes offer students the opportunity to learn to sew so that not only can they can repair their families clothes, they can learn how to produce simple items such as button-down shirts and skirts in order to earn an income.
In addition to providing sewing lessons and tutorials around the city, volunteers with fashion know-how are needed to help with new ideas and designs for items to be produced around sold to tourists by the residents. Requests for simple items such as school uniforms for their children are common, so come with a few economical ideas. Sewing really does open doors on Siem Reap and combined with local Micro-finance initiatives helps raise the income levels of many families.
We work with a number of NGO’s in Siem Reap and placements are tailored to your own particular skills, while ensuring that the needs of the project are met. NGOs are always in need of an extra skilled pair of hands and welcome new ideas and designs to bolster their programme. The projects are desperate for new techniques and ideas to enable their new seamstresses to make items, which make them stand out above others in the area.
Siem Reap is Cambodia’s most visited city due to the famous Angkor Wat temple complex. Sunset and sunrise are the most popular times to visit and it is well worth it. Despite the hoards of tourists, it’s still easy to get a feel for everyday Cambodian life in Siem Reap and use your bicycle and explore the back streets or the riverside on your days off.
