Downton Abbey: the film - trailer

The plot of the Downton Abbey film has been revealed.

According to Variety, a new trailer for the spin-off project debuted at CinemaCon, which showed the Crawley family and domestic workers preparing for the arrival of King George V and Queen Mary.

The film is set in 1927, during a time when the wealth of the Crawley family isn’t as grand as it used to be. Since they now employ fewer servants, the Crawleys turn to retired head butler Carson for help ahead of the royal visit.

Lady Mary Crawley, meanwhile, is considering leaving the estate for good. Yet, Anna Bates, her maid, tries to dissuade her, telling her: “Downton Abbey is the heart of this community and you’re keeping it beating.”

The film, directed by Michael Engler, sees the return of the likes of Maggie Smith, Elizabeth McGovern, Michelle Dockery, Penelope Wilton, and Hugh Bonneville.

It will be released in UK cinemas on 13 September.
