Michael Sleggs, the actor best known for appearing in the BBC Three comedy series This Country, has died, aged 33.

The actor, who played Slugs in the award-winning series, suffered from heart complications. The news comes days after he told fans he had just days to live.

Writing on Facebook, he said: “Hi friends, as a lot of you are probably aware I’ve spent a lot of time in and out of hospital over the past few months.

“This last time it was decided I was reaching the end of options so they’ve sent me home on palliative care to live out the remainder of my days at home. No specific time limit has been given but deterioration has been fairly rapid.”

He added: “Anyway as you can imagine this isn’t the ideal way I wished things to go and my family are dealing with a lot of grief.”

In May, the actor was put into palliative care because his heart failure “was getting out of control”, but he went on to make what he called a “miraculous recovery”.

In a tragic echo of real life, Slugs also battles terminal cancer in the comedy programme.

“I don’t know how long this turn around will last but I’ll try and keep alive as long as I can,” he wrote.

Sleggs appeared in This Country alongside Daisy May and Charlie Cooper.
