Neil Lennon and his assistant Garry Parker have left Hibernian by mutual consent after being suspended by the Scottish Premiership club.

The pair were suspended on Friday after reports of an exchange with several club employees, but Hibs were keen to stress he was not dismissed and has not resigned.

“Despite widespread speculation, the club confirms that neither Neil nor Garry has been guilty of any misconduct or wrongdoing and no disciplinary process has been commenced,” read a club statement.

Lennon leaves Hibs seventh in the Premiership but was winless in his last five league matches as manager.

The former Celtic and Bolton manager secured promotion from the Scottish Championship in his first season with the Edinburgh club before reaching the third qualifying round of the Europa League in a season where they equalled a record points today by finishing fourth in 2017-18.

“I would like to thank the board, the coaching staff, the players and all the fans for making the last two and a half years so enjoyable,” Lennon is quoted on the club website. “It has been the privilege to serve the club and I wish it every success in the future.”

Club chairman Rod Petrie wished the pair the best in a short statement. “We are grateful to Neil and Garry for all their efforts and in particular for leading the club back to the top flight of Scottish football. We wish nothing but the best for Neil and Garry and their families for the future.”

While there were highlights to his time at Hibs, Lennon’s final few months was marred by being struck by a coin after goading Hearts supporters in a feisty derby. “It was unsavoury to say the least. It’s unacceptable,” Lennon said of the incident in late October.

Chris Sutton, who won the Scottish Premiership four times with Celtic said that the affair does not reflect well on Hibs. “Here it is...” he said on Twitter. “So Neil Lennon has been exonerated of any wrongdoing and misconduct by Hibs... he wasn’t dismissed and did not resign... this takes some working out... so it looks like he was suspended for absolutely nothing... Hibs haven’t come out of this well...”

Eddie May and Grant Murray guided Hibs to victory against St Mirren during Lennon’s absence, but May, who is the head of academy coaching, says he does not want to succeed Lennon.
