England cricket team meet Theresa May at Downing Street after winning World Cup

Eoin Morgan demonstrated his leadership skills by stopping the England cricket team chanting “Allez Allez Allez” at 10 Downing Street, according to reports.

The captain stepped in to urge his players to be quiet when they launched into the song celebrating their World Cup win against New Zealand.

“Look guys, we’ve got to calm it,” he told them, according to The Daily Telegraph’s account of the reception held by outgoing prime minister Theresa May.

The captain may have wanted to prevent a repeat of the scenes at Downing Street the day after the Ashes victory in 2005.

On that occasion Michael Vaughan’s squad – including Kevin Pietersen and Andrew Flintoff – looked the worse for wear when they arrived to meet Tony Blair, his wife Cherie and children Euan and Nicky.

Matthew Hoggard later admitted that he had called the Labour PM a “knob” as they stepped outside for photographs, while Vaughan claimed he recruited Euan to buy them some more beer.

“I don’t remember much of it, to be honest,” Pietersen recalled. “I don’t even remember shaking the Prime Minister’s hand.”

Monday’s reception saw Ms May praise the team for representing modern Britain and inspiring “countless future Morgans, Rashids and Archers”.

“When the odds were against you in the biggest game of your lives, you simply and stubbornly refused to lose,” she told them.

“It is that determination, that character, that has made you world champions. But more than that, you have made history. You have helped the nation fall in love with cricket once again.”

The team were then photographed lifting the World Cup with the prime minister outside the doors of Number 10.

“It was nothing like in 2005,” according to an unnamed source quoted in the Telegraph. ”Everything was in good spirits and it was a fantastic day for English cricket.

“There was certainly no danger of any rude words being uttered in that song and Eoin quickly told them to calm it.”

The lyrics to the team’s version of the stadium chant include: “Our captain is Morgan, taking the cap forward, as the World Champions, Allez, Allez, Allez”.
