Brixton stabbing: Teenager charged with murder after man knifed to death at youth club

Thursday's killing was the second fatal stabbing on the same road in less than a year

A 17-year-old has been charged with murder after a man was stabbed to death at a youth club in south London last week.

The boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was charged on Sunday, following the death of Glendon Spence in an incident in Brixton three days prior.

Mr Spence was attacked at the Marcus Lipton Youth Club on Minet Road at around 6.45pm on Thursday.

Despite receiving first aid at the scene before being taken via air ambulance for further care, the 23-year-old died on the way to hospital.

At the time, police said anyone at the youth club who saw the altercation should come forward.

“A number of detailed forensic and CCTV footage related enquiries are in hand and police are appealing for information,” a statement from detectives said.

Police announced on Monday a teenager had been charged over the killing and was due to appear before magistrates in Bromley later that day.

London has seen a surge in knife crime since the beginning of last year - and the Brixton murder came after another 18-year-old was fatally knifed on the same road in July.

Latwaan Griffiths was later carried around half a mile on the back of a moped to Denmark Road, Camberwell, before CCTV showed a rider dumping him in the street.

Some 132 people were killed in the capital in 2018, the highest figure in a single year for a decade.

Fifty-seven per cent of the deaths were caused by stabbings.
