Golden Globes 2019: Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg 'eject' Jim Carrey in opening monologue

Golden Globes hosts Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg impressed with a joke-filled opening monologue during which they lovingly poked fun at several of this year's nominees.

The Killing Eve and Brooklyn Nine-Nine stars kicked off proceedings to the 76th annual ceremony by quipping that they were selected for the job because they're “the only two people in Hollywood who haven't gotten in trouble for saying something offensive”.

They also referenced the recent controversy surrounding the role of Oscars host after Kevin Hart stepped down due to the resurfacing of old homophobic tweets.

“We are gonna have some fun, give out some awards and one lucky audience will host the Oscars,” Samberg said.

The highlight of their monologue arrived when the pair “ejected” Jim Carrey for sitting with the film nominees despite being nominated for his role in TV series Kidding.

Below are the best jokes from their opening monologue.

“You know what race of people really gets under my skin? The Hollywood half-marathon, because it really messes up traffic … it’s the worst race of people.”

“A Star Is Born, starring Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga is nominated for Best Picture, Drama … it just proves — I’m just coming up with this now — that there’s could be 100 people in the room and 99 don’t believe in you, and you just need one to believe in you.” Lady Gaga, shouting from the audience: “It’s true!”

“Crazy Rich Asians … is the first studio film with an Asian-American lead since Ghost in the Shell and Aloha."

“Crazy Rich Asians made over $20m at the box office. Said Asian moms everywhere."

“Vice is an intense drama about Dick Chaney. But it’s actually up for Best Musical or Comedy because it erroneously invaded the wrong category based on false intelligence.”

“First Man is also how studios look for directors. “First, man. If no man available, then pair of man. Then team of man. Then eventually, maybe a woman?”

“Rami Malek wore Freddie Mercury’s teeth throughout Bohemian Rhapsody. Can you imagine how hard that must have been? I mean, first of all, you have to get the family’s permission to exhume the body. I don’t even know where you would begin with that conversation.”

The 76th Golden Globes ceremony was hosted by Killing Eve star Sandra Oh and Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s Andy Samberg, whose quips led to a whitewashing apology from Emma Stone.

The evening, designed to award the best in film and television, saw wins for Green Book, The Marvelous Mrs Maisel and Bohemian Rhapsody, which was the unexpected recipient of the ceremony's biggest award.
